Have you ever wondered where the word cocktail comes from? Apparently, no one does either. Its exact origin is quite unknown. It would be silly to assume that as we imbibe, we worry about such things… but here are a few gossipy facts about cocktails’ presumed origin.
According to Difford’s Guide (for discerning drinkers), there is an astounding list of 8 theories, but we’ll point out the one we liked the best and the one the ethyl chaperone discerns as the “most plausible”.
In a tavern in Mexico… a group of English sailors noticed that mixed drinks were being stirred with the root of a plant called cola de gallo, in English: a cock’s tail’. Legend has it that these navigants then brought back to England this newly acquired reference to the elixirs created by combined ethylic elements, that even Dionysus was proud of.
The “most plausible” theory is not as savvy, it’s a bit of a drag from the Oxford dictionary that speaks about chimeric horses with docked tails indicating mixed blood… thus suggesting the word cocktail in the same manner as mixed would be the steed and a drink. Not cool at all, right? There was one other word from the gallic lands, Coquetel… but let’s let the Brits have this one.
